Semi-aquatic native shrub is one of the latest to leaf out in spring. It has distinctive balls, or buttons, about the size of a gumball, of white to cream colored flowers that bloom in June. The flowers are fragrant, last about 1 month, and are followed by seedheads that turn red and eventually dark brown.  Mature plant is 3-12’ tall and 3’-6’ wide. Grows in full sun. Grows in wet soils, even flooded conditions and standing water. Good for erosion control. Deer-resistant. Native to Massachusetts.

On Dr. RJ Gegear’s list of plant for at risk butterflies and bees. Also attracts moths including Titan Sphinx, Hydrangea sphinx.  The seeds are eaten by the mallard, wood duck, and many other. The nectar is eaten by the hummingbird.
