Striking native wildflower with brilliant, vivid, red flowers on tall spires. Blooms in late summer. Grows 2-4 feet tall and 1-2 feet wide. Has a basal rosette of leaves and leave along the stem. Grows best in filtered light and moist conditions. Tolerant of full sun if kept moist. Native habitats are marshes and edges of streams, ponds and lakes. Parent plant will only live few years but it will self seed. Keeping the basal foliage from being covered with leaf litter, mulch, or other debris may help it live longer. Native to Massachusetts.
