This is Joey, one of the three owners, operators and farmers of Rattle Root Farm. Despite a busy fall schedule, Joey gave us a thorough, informative tour of their operation. Along with his partners, Hannah and Pete, their business focuses on CSA and wholesale.
Joey explained to us that before officially opening Rattle Root, they took a year to really plan, organize and develop the farm operations. You can see this immediately when stepping onto the property and how meticulously everything is organized.
This is the WCCD group beginning our tour!
Behind Joey is a peaceful path where people can come and pick their own flowers! Spacious, vibrant and well stocked, it’s a great area to connect with nature.
Rows of fresh herbs are also available for pick your own! (photos below)

You may think this is an obstacle course challenge, but these are natural psychological barriers to keep deer from getting into the growing beds.
Joey explained to us that since deer mostly rely on peripheral vision, this series of ropes confuses them enough that they can’t get through the barrier.

To better understand weather patterns and changes, the farm invested in their own weather center.
Their goal is that this will give them more accurate information to respond to weather and come up with mitigation strategies.

These beds are strategically placed to attract pollinators and beetles.
Native plants and grasses are purposely grown to provide a natural habitat for crucial insect life.

Check out this CSA operation!
Though their CSA will be closing for the season, make sure to check out their half and full share options for next year!
