Fast growing, upright shrub grows to 10-15 feet with a mature spread of 10-20 feet. Thrives in disturbed habitats including forest borders and roadsides. Prefers shade or partial sun. White, bell-shaped flowers become papery seed capsules.

Hosts native bees and insects. Only member of its family in New England. Relatively pest free.
