Process for Soil Testing:

  • Please use the link below to submit a request to our Conservation Planner, Georgia Albanese. You can also email Georgia at georgia.albanese@usda.gov
  • Georgia will be in touch with you directly to schedule a date to visit your site and discuss any specifics surrounding the test. Please keep in mind that one sample can easily cover one lawn or garden area.  You can also get results for different plant interests and concerns from one sample. For example, if you are interested in what your soil needs for your home garden and your perennial beds, that can be determined from one test. If your area is larger or has other concerns (like contamination) our planner may recommend multiple tests once seeing the location.
  • On your scheduled date, Georgia will visit your site, meet with you and take soil samples. Samples are composed of multiple sub-samples from different yard areas for accuracy and is conducted per USDA-NRCS protocols. One sample per “management unit” is recommended (e.g., separate lawn and garden samples).
  • After the samples are dry, they will be mailed for analysis to the Maine Agricultural and Forest Experiment Station (MAFES) Analytical Laboratory, located at the University of Maine. See below for details on what the lab tests for.
  • Once the lab has finished their analysis, they will email a report directly to you, with Georgia on copy.
  • Georgia will be available to walk you through the results and can make recommendations based on your needs.
Lab Analysis includes:

pH; Lime Index; Available Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Sulfur, Boron, Copper, Iron, Manganese, Sodium, Zinc by modified Morgan method; Organic matter; Metals scan; Calculated Cation Exchange Capacity.

*Lead testing is included in the metals scan. If heavy contamination of metals is detected, a separate test would be performed to get the specific levels, at no additional cost.
** A Soluble Salt test that measures the salinity content of the soil can also be performed. Chose this add on below.
