About Us

The Worcester County Conservation District (WCCD) is a division of state government, created by state law, to provide local leadership in the conservation of our natural resources. As such, the district is governed by a board of volunteer Supervisors who are responsible for identifying natural resource concerns in our communities. The board then coordinates public and private resources to address those concerns. To accomplish much of our work, WCCD has partnerships with state and federal agencies and local conservation organizations. We have well-established, long-term working relationships with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs. WCCD has developed an established structure that can, therefore, quickly supply expertise and manpower to solve environmental issues.

Our activities include:
  • Soil Sampling Services. We will come out to your property, gather soil samples, prepare them for mailing the UMASS Extension and help interpret results if needed.
  • Assisting agricultural and natural resource businesses through farm planning and technical assistance.
  • Supplying plants for conservation, wildlife, home gardens and landscaping through our annual seedling sale and fall bulb sale.
  • Providing workshops and educational materials for schools, landowners, and environmental professionals.
  • Offering college scholarships for Worcester County students entering college to pursue environmental careers.
  • Supporting the Massachusetts Envirothon environmental education program and competition for high school students.
  • Organizing local working groups to provide input and guidance for federal conservation programs.
